Hound Group – AKC Foundation Stock Service (FSS)

The Azawakh, also known as the Tuareg Sloughi or Sloughi, is a tall slender and elegent dog that is loyal, yet independent.  With a keen eye, speed and stamina they are a driven hunter.  They should be watched when around children or other animals.  The prey instinct is very strong and anything running away from the dog may be seen as prey.  “Family socialization” could reduce this likelihood, but the breed may still become protective if it senses something is happening to “his” child or owner.  They can be sensitive to stressful situations.  They need a lot of running exercise.  Lure coursing competition is a great pasttime.  As of Jaunary 1, 2008 the Azawakh has been approved to compete in all AKC Performance and Companion Events.
