Native to Switzerland the Bernese Mountain Dog is a large dog with a predominantly jet-black coat. Its cheeks, legs and eye areas are a russet color, the feet, tail tip, and chest are white. It is strong yet agile enough to haul heavy loads in a mountainous land.

The Bernese is a hardy dog, thriving in cold weather. The heavy coat requires daily grooming. These are intelligent dogs capable of affection and playfulness. The Bernese is a great family dog who cannot resist the company of children. A gentle nature and its faithfulness to the family makes it a great companion for those who can accommodate the size and needs of this breed.

This dog needs quality human contact for emotional development and well-being. Overall, the temperament of a Bernese is self-confident, alert and good natured. Neither sharp or shy, although it may be aloof to attention of strangers.

According to the AKC standard, Bernese Mountain Dogs can stand to 27 1/2 inches at the withers (males, 25 - 27 1/2; females 23-26 inches). Appearing square, they are longer in body than tall. The head of the Bernese is large in proportion to the body; flat on the top of the skull. The muzzle is strong and straight. Because it is a dry-mouthed breed the flews are only slightly developed. (Flews are the upper lip pendulous. In wet-mouthed dogs; e.g., mastiffs, bulldogs, retrievers, the flews are large and collect saliva and spittle.) The neck is strong and muscular; chest is deep; the back is broad and firm with broad and strong thighs.

Although capable of speed and agility, the working gait of the Bernese Mountain Dog is a slow trot.

Book Suggestions

We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.

If you would like help locating a breeder or rescue agency near you please E-Mail PGAA ( ita408@comcast.net), and let us know your city/state and the type of dog you are looking for. Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site. Do your own check of each breeder or rescue -- be sure that you are comfortable with the organization before you buy, adopt or turn-over a dog.
