Declawing Your Cat

NO!

This should be the last option for a cat owner as you are removing an integral part of the cat – sort of like pulling out your own fingernails.  Its is not a natural or health-saving procedure, and a declawed cat may undergo a severe personality change.

Declawing should only be considered to prevent a cat from becoming destructive to its surroundings, people or other pets, and only after all other options have failed.

A declawed cat can never return to the outdoors without constant human supervision and protection.  A declawed cat is defenseless.

Options to declawing include:

  • Scratching post
  • Discouraging destructive scratching (new coverings, offending scents)
  • Keep the cat’s nails trimmed
