The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is the larger of the two Basset Griffon Breeds (Basset meaning low to ground) The other is the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen

The GBGV is tallest of the Basset breeds with straight front legs and no crook.  It is a well-balanced, medium height, rough-coated hound with a friendly and intelligent look and noble bearing.  It is a strong, active and courageous breed possessing great stamina to keep going in the field. It has a good voice, freely used.  Expect an exciting youth of 3-4 years before it matures into a more relaxed companion; yet still expect bursts of youthful exuberance.  The GBGV can make wonderful family pets and wish to be part of the action.  It is not suited for long periods alone in the home.  It’s happy and outgoing yet, independent and a little stubborn.  On walks in the field they may answer the call of the scent and not necessarily pay much attention to you.  They are easily trained but the hunting instinct can override what they have learned.  They will return but usually on their own terms.  Not easily agitated and willing to please with firm handling.  The GBGV will take the Alpha role if allowed.  The breed needs its exercise (walking or hunting) and should have an area to roam about.  The GBGV need regular combing through the whole coat particulary  moustache,  belly, under tail and on legs,  not just brushing.  The coat should be tidied up with a stripping knife about once a month, but not clipped.

We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization.  Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.  Please visit NoPuppyMills.comIf you would like help locating a breeder or rescue agency near you please E-Mail PGAA ( ita408@comcast.net), and let us know your city/state and the type of dog you are looking for.  Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site.  Do your own check of each breeder or rescue — be sure that you are comfortable with the organization before you buy, adopt or turn-over a dog.
