The Labrador Retriever, this friendly family dog has remained in the top spot for all 24 years.

Why is the Labrador Retriever so popular? Well to start with, they are a lovable, good around children, intelligent, and very trainable.

This dog breed is part of the sporting group and was officially recognized by the AKC in 1917.

The Labrador Retriever is a playful pup and that playfulness remains well into their adult life. They are very friendly and get along well with other dogs.

They are intelligent and very trainable. If you’re looking for your first dog this is a good choice because they are forgiving if you make training errors. Their eyes are so expressive; that you can see the love this dog has for his family and for life.

Labrador’s are considered a medium size dog, weighing between 55 and 75 pounds. Their height range is between 21 and 24 inches. They have a life span of about 11 to 12 years. Most medium and large breed dogs tend to have a shorter life span than their tinier counterparts.

They have a water-resistant coat, webbed paws, and an otter like tail that makes them good hunting dogs that can retrieve (hence the name) game such as ducks that has landed in the water.

The Labrador has a strong jaw but is very gentle when retrieving items. It’s said that they can carry an egg in their mouth without breaking it.

Here’s a video of a Labrador Retriever carrying an egg. While this dog Jake may still need some training in other areas still let’s see what happens.

The Labrador’s colors are black (the most common), chocolate (this is the rare color), and yellow.

There are a couple of medical issues to watch for that Labs are susceptible to. I’ll let this short 5-minute video from Animal Planet’s Dog 101 tell you about that and more on this dog breed.

Were there any famous Labrador Retrievers? Yes, I believe the most well-known is Marley from Marley & Me. This movie is based on John Grogan’s bestseller Marley & Me. If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend you watch it. I loved it, and have watched it several times.

Bill Clinton also had a Chocolate Labrador named Buddy. Buddy was the famous first pet and was in several photos with the Clinton’s. He was named for Bill’s late great-uncle.

Another famous Labrador Retriever was Zanjeer a detection dog that was used in Mumbai in 1993. He spotted weapons and ammunition. Zanjeer detected 57 country-made bombs 175 gas bombs, and many other grenades and detonators. Many people in Mumbai were extremely grateful for Zanjeer.

Labrador Retrievers are so versatile that you can teach them all kinds of games especially find it or a great game of hide and seek. They’ll sniff you out in no time once they learn the game and know there is a treat in it for them.

Remember treats don’t always have to be food. It can be a fun game of fetch. Food may be used to get them to learn the game, but after that, it can be their favorite toy or game. Always reward for a job well done.

Biting and nipping is the one training issue you need to nip in the bud at puppy-hood (pun not intended). The have a tendency for this behavior.

You should be an active person if you select a Lab for your family dog. These dogs are highly active and need exercise.

Any active dog breed that doesn’t get the right amount of activity can become trouble. Why, because they get bored if they are just lying around. Any dog trainer will tell you a bored dog is one that will get into trouble. Make sure your ready for an active dog.

This dog once trained will be ready to go along with you. Do you love going to the beach or boating? This dog enjoys a game of fetch in the water.

Want to learn even more about Labrador Retrievers there is a great book on Amazon that will give you the low down on this dog breed. Labrador Retriever (Smart Owner’s Guide) written by Kennel Club Books this is a great primer for people who are considering this dog breed.

If your ready to look for your first dog, second, or third dog, the Labrador Retriever makes a perfect fit for your active family, and because they get along well with other dogs they are a good choice for a multi-dog household.

The Labrador Retriever is:

  • Lovable
  • Intelligent
  • Easy to Train
  • Easy to Groom
  • Good with Kids
  • Water lover
  • Active
  • Playful

It is always best to research the dog breed you are considering bringing into your family. It’s important that you are sure you have the right fit, and a dog breed that is suitable for your family’s lifestyle.
