Norwegian Elkhound
Scent Hound
Norwegian Elkhounds from Castlebar Elkhounds
The Norwegian Elkhound is a good family pet and watchdog. While normally friendly with strangers its loud bark and its “pearly whites” go a long way in discouraging unwanted visitors. An energetic dog that requires daily exercise sessions. OK for apartments only if it gets a strong daily workout. It really enjoys a romp in the wild, but may go off on its own if it catches the right scent. Training may be difficult and requires a firm and fair hand. This dog can be very unforgiving if poorly handled. They usually get along with other canines except in a direct male to male situation. The jury is still out as far as non-canine pets are concerned. May not be an issue if the dog was raised with other animals. They are easily maintained with a regular brushing, and have very little “doggy” smell.
